BADER ROAD RESIDENTS REJECT CYCLE/FOOTPATH IMPROVEMENTS

4th November 2009

Despite the rain, Bader Road residents turned out in force in tonight's public meeting to discuss linking the centre of Wilford Village to the cycle/footpath near the Emmanuel and Becket Schools. Area Committee councillors and a Council officer were present and PC Nigel Brown was there to reassure residents about the (low) levels of crime in Wilford. After a "lively" debate and presentation of views, a vote rejected the opportunity to make improvements.

However, the funding remains available and the Council will now consult with Vernon Avenue and Holly Avenue residents about possible improvements to the footpath at the rear of Vernon Avenue. No consultation process has been announced yet, but full details will be advertised here when known.

TELEPHONE SCAM REPORTED

12th September 2009

It has been reported that someone has received a call from a 'representative' of BT, informing him that he was dis-connecting me because of an unpaid bill. He demanded payment immediately or it would cost £118 to re-connect at a later date. The caller wasn't even fazed when he told him that he was with Virgin Media. The caller's name was John Peacock but had a very 'African' accent - & phone number - 0800 0800 152. The caller then offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. He told the receiver of the call to hang up & try phoning someone - he would disconnect my phone to prevent this. And indeed the phone was dead when he tried to make a call. He then demanded payment by credit card again but when refused payment a further time rang off. The number he had been given did not exist The supposed cutting off of the line is very simple , he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying. This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it. When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced! The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool the elderly and vulnerable. Please pass this on to friends and family and be on your guard. Click here for the story in Nottingham Evening Post.

TRAVELLERS MOVE ON - VIA WILFORD RUGBY GROUND

25th June 2009

After having been served papers to quit the Gresham Fields sports ground, the travellers promptly moved onto the Wilford rugby pitches last night (Wednesday 24th June) - that was the disturbance Wilford Village residents would have heard. However, as they had moved onto private property and had broken a locked barrier to gain entrance, police were able to serve notice to leave the grounds the same day. As is usual with these situations, a great deal of waste was left on Gresham Fields, despite the local council having left a skip there.

MESSAGE FROM PC NIGEL BROWN

BOGUS CALLERS/WORKERS

19th June 2009

There have already been a few incidents of Bogus Caller/Distraction type crimes in West Bridgford area. These crimes are typically committed by a person knocking on a door stating they are from the water boards/gas board/ electric company and there is a problem on the street requiring immediate attention. The person will then insist on gaining entry to check the meter or water pressure etc. Once inside a second person will sneak in and steal valuables whilst the householder is distracted with the first person. DO NOT LET STRANGERS INTO YOUR HOUSES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Check with the utility departments to confirm the identity and ring the Police if you have any suspicions but keep them outside and lock your door before you call. Refuse entry.

There have also been incidents of cold calling to repair gutters, roofs, prune trees etc. Do not let strangers do any work, they are likely to quote a cheap price then demand a large amount of cash if you allow them to work on your premises. The work is also likely to be substandard.

If in any doubt ring the Police immediately 01159455999 or in emergency 999.

The crimes as described cannot directly be attributed to these travellers but experience shows that this type of crime increases whenever we have groups in the area.

Please spread the work to prevent this type of crime happening.

In the light of the objections and comments received, the Secretary of State for Transport will hold a public local inquiry into the proposals in November 2009.

The inquiry gives objectors and others the opportunity to be heard before an independent Inspector. The formal notice of intention to hold a public enquiry requests that alternative route or new highway proposals should be submitted to the Highways Agency by 25th June 2009.  If you intend to submit such a proposal, could you please notify the A453 Widening Team of your intention by 11th June 2009.  If you have already submitted such a proposal, then you do not have to submit it again.

Following the public inquiry, the Secretary of State for Transport and the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government will consider the Inspector's report, together with any objections and representations made, before making their decision on the future of the scheme. If the scheme proceeds, the Highways Agency will make statutory Orders and purchase the land required for the scheme.
