PC Nigel Brown reported that crime is at a low level in Wilford, although he did not have the latest figures.  The only significant incident had been the recent assault and intimidation of a female resident of Holly Avenue following her identification of someone responsible for an earlier burglary at her home.  Police had installed cameras and alarms to help protect her and had temporarily accommodated her and her partner elsewhere.  The investigation is “ongoing” and the perpetrator has not yet been apprehended as far as we know.

The November 5th bonfire at the rugby club had not caused any problems this year.  PC Brown urged residents to check the identity of door to door callers as there had been some people posing as water board employees or police officers in the Beeston area.

Committee members pointed out a need for lighting on the new footpath close to Iremonger’s Pond and on the path to the rear of Vernon Avenue which is now well used by pupils at the new Emmanuel School.

PC Brown had requested a white cycle path line outside Wilford Post office .

Elaine Stension mentioned a consultation event planned for 5/6 December at Cornerstone in Clifton in relation to planned improvements to the A453.

Minutes:  Minutes of the committee meeting held in October 2008 were read and approved.

Matters Arising from the minutes:

·   Litter bins:  CA had noted (by email) that the large planter outside the old village shop was being used as a litter bin.  All litter bins are now multi-purpose.  Elaine reported that through the Neighbourhood Action Team agreement had been reached with the Area Committee to buy two further bins.  One will be placed close to Bader Road on Main Road and the other in Silverdale. DA pointed out that far fewer school children walk to Emmanuel School down Main Road so w need to find out where the litter ‘hotspots’ currently are.

·   RS pointed out that the bin between the Ferry Inn and the toll bridge should be placed closer to the path used by children walking to school post the pond.  The meeting also felt that there should be a bin close to the new benches by the pond.  BH and Elaine agreed to visit the site and decide on possible siting, bearing in mind that bins need to be easily accessible for emptying

·   Football Training scheme:  this was going well in Clifton with a good turn out.  The Daily Telegraph will be visiting the scheme so there is likely to be a lot of publicity.

·   Centre of Excellence at Clifton Youth Centre:  some at the meeting felt that the Clifton

venue was not attractive to young people in Wilford.  It was agreed that WCG should write to the Area Committee to try to ensure Wilford youngsters are catered for.  PC Brown pointed out that Clifton residents are a higher priority because of much higher crime rates etc.

·    Refuse bins, once emptied, are left all over the place by the bin men not residents.  This matter put on hold for the time being.

·   Suspension bridge:  WCG is keen to get this re-opened and will offer support to the Central West Bridgford Community Association.  It was also suggested that WCG should contact the Meadows Community Association.

·   Co-op Parking:  several local residents had been fined for over-staying the 2 hour parking limit which is strictly enforced by the company employed to do this.  Cameras are installed too.

·   Iremonger’s Pond:  A successful clean-up day had been held on Saturday 15 November, clearing all visible litter.  The Environment Agency will be photographing in the area on 19 November.  Thanks to all those for this.

Area 9 Meeting:  BH expressed disappointment that the committee focuses exclusively on Clifton issues.  The old Wilford Youth Club is being sold and the money will be passed on to the new Centre of Excellence in Clifton.

A letter had been received from Councillor Tim Spencer about Christmas lights in Wilford.  He said this is not possible this year but he would like to meet residents in early 2009 to discuss plans for Christmas next year.

RS said that he felt our Conservative Councillors could use more of the money available to each Ward area representative (a total of £6,000).  Elaine reiterated that they had decided to put most of the money in a central pot to cover the whole Clifton/Silverdale/Wilford area.  JF had brought some information about grants WCG could apply for but she reminded the group that there would be health and safety and public liability issues relating to street decorations.

5.

Benches and Signs:   JF had obtained quotes for provision of both.  She needed more specific information about siting and design in order to pursue various grant opportunities.  ‘Grass Roots’ has grants available up to £5,000.  The application was being made on a ‘Heritage Trail’ basis.   RS wondered what local residents would like.  Elaine suggested that WCG could raise the profile of these plans via the Arrow and ask for opinions.  BH suggested asking Gleeds for financial support once the grant application had been made.

6.

Planters:  some had been emptied ready for winter planting.  The group accepted the offer from RS to move the planter outside the old shop so that it is better placed to prevent parking on the pavement.  FW reported that a resident had wanted to know if Grange Close volunteers could take over the responsibility of looking after the planters from the Council. FW said that this might create problems if residents were to move away and it was agreed that responsibility should remain with the Council. One local resident has objected to the placing of planters in Grange Close

Any other Business

Dimple Kaur of the CVS and Community Network with responsibility for linking together community groups is to be invited to the January WCG meeting.

SA had been approached by Debbie Crawley from the Youth Service about starting a youth group in Wilford  but no further contact yet.

Elaine reminded WCG that we need to discuss the recommendations arising from the youth consultation earlier in the year e.g. linking to the church youth group about the possibility of having a group that is not faith based.  Will be on February agenda.

There will be a consultation about at Skate Board development at Clifton Playing Fields on November 25 at 600 p.m.

Elaine distributed a leaflet about a domestic violence training day for members of the community.

The meeting closed at 9.45 p.m.
