We are the members of the student community action group, better known as KYN.

And we are looking to build strengths, characteristics, and relationships within our local communities, leading to the development of community spirit.

We chose our action group's name because it stands for our main objective, and that is to “Know Your Neighbour”.

Here are just a few of the facts that point out the increasing gap produced in modern communities.

Less than 30% of the population who live in urban areas know the first names of at least one of their neighbours

Even fewer people actually know their neighbours' full names

and that more than 25% of the country's population have not even made conversation with their neighbours

The idea we came up with, was to create a community picnic, based at a local park or open space, where we can bring people from all backgrounds in the area together. We will provide the entertainment, activities, light snacks, and the space. But it is up to the community to fulfil our objective.

To begin with, we decided to host our event in the nearby village of Wilford. This gave us a chance to link with other organisations already outstanding in the area. Such as the Wilford Community Group, and Iremongers Pond Association. With these links, it was clear that we could hold it at the local pond - Iremongers Pond - which through recent extensive restoration, is a great natural environment right in the centre of a community. This seemed like a perfect chance to rake in support from local businesses such as a village pub or shop. So we sent out a set of letters, requesting different services such as catering, prize giving or publicity.

We are also looking to bring in free fishing taster lessons for residents of all ages. This will be organised through a local fishing teacher who is happy to help the local community.

So a brief summary of what we have organised is....an afternoon picnic style event on the 25th of April, to bring a local community together, based at the Iremongers Pond in Wilford. We will offer food throughout the afternoon, and we will be organising events from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. These events and activities will include a small scavenger style treasure hunt for the younger generation, a raffle organised to give each attendee a ticket, then extra tickets will be sold for a small donation to local organisations, this raffle will have prizes donated from local businesses. We may also have a set of small quizzes to challenge older generations of the area. We may also have local budding musicians playing throughout the event, to showcase the skills and talents of the local area.
